The Indian car market witnessed a major shift in July 2026, with Maruti Suzuki making a powerful comeback at the top of the sales charts. After Tata Motors dominated the June rankings with the Punch and Nexon taking the first two positions, July brought a completely different picture.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire returned to the number-one position, while the Wagon R, Ertiga and Swift followed closely behind. In fact, Maruti Suzuki placed 11 models in the top 25, highlighting the brand’s enormous reach across hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs, MPVs and utility vehicles.
The Tata Punch remained strong but slipped to fifth position, while the Tata Nexon fell from second in June to ninth in July.

Maruti Dzire Returns to Number One
The biggest headline from July was the return of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire to the top of the sales chart.
The compact sedan recorded 23,791 units, comfortably beating the Wagon R at 23,398 units. The Dzire had sold 17,899 units in June, meaning its July performance represented a significant month-on-month recovery.
The result also demonstrates that sedans continue to have a strong customer base in India despite the overwhelming popularity of SUVs.
Wagon R, Ertiga and Swift Complete Maruti’s Top-Four Sweep
Maruti’s dominance did not stop with the Dzire.
The Wagon R finished second with 23,398 units, continuing its reputation as one of India’s most practical family cars. Its spacious cabin, easy ownership and strong mileage continue to attract buyers.
The Ertiga took third place with 21,606 units. Its strong CNG demand remains an important factor, particularly among buyers looking for a practical seven-seater with lower running costs.
The Swift completed the top four with 21,538 units. Its combination of compact dimensions, fuel efficiency and familiar Maruti ownership experience continues to make it one of India’s strongest-selling hatchbacks.
Together, the Dzire, Wagon R, Ertiga and Swift sold more than 90,000 units in a single month.
Tata Punch Remains Strong Despite Losing the Top Spot
The Tata Punch finished fifth with 21,313 units.
Interestingly, the Punch did not suffer a major collapse in demand. It actually sold slightly more than it did in June, when it recorded 21,006 units.
The reason for its lower ranking was simply the extraordinary surge from Maruti’s models.
The Punch therefore remains one of India’s strongest-selling cars, especially in the compact SUV segment.
Fronx and Baleno Continue Maruti’s Dominance
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx finished sixth with 19,473 units, while the Baleno followed in seventh with 18,241 units.
Their combined sales crossed 37,700 units, showing how effectively Maruti covers different customer preferences with closely related products.
The Baleno appeals to buyers looking for a spacious and efficient premium hatchback, while the Fronx offers a more SUV-inspired design and stronger visual appeal.
Hyundai Creta Makes a Strong Comeback
The Hyundai Creta returned to the upper part of the sales chart with approximately 18,088 units, securing eighth place.
Its July performance was particularly important because the Creta had struggled badly in June due to production and supply disruptions.
The recovery shows that the model continues to have strong demand in India’s midsize SUV market once adequate supply is available.
Tata Nexon Drops to Ninth
The Tata Nexon recorded 17,471 units in July and finished ninth.
That represents a noticeable fall from its second-place position in June, when Tata sold 18,335 units.
However, the ranking makes the decline appear larger than the actual volume change. The Nexon sold only around 800 fewer units than in June, while several Maruti models experienced significant increases.
The Nexon therefore remains a major player in the compact SUV segment despite losing ground in the monthly ranking.
Mahindra Scorpio Holds the Top 10
The Mahindra Scorpio, combining the Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N, recorded around 16,000 units, keeping it comfortably inside the top 10.
The Scorpio continues to benefit from its strong brand image, rugged design and broad appeal among SUV buyers.
Its presence alongside the Punch, Nexon, Fronx and Creta highlights just how competitive India’s SUV market has become.
Maruti’s Eeco and Alto Prove Basic Cars Still Matter
At number 11, the Maruti Suzuki Eeco recorded 13,896 units.
The Eeco is an interesting example of how Indian consumers do not always prioritise premium features. Its simple design, practical interior and low running costs make it particularly useful for commercial and family applications.
The Maruti Alto, meanwhile, recorded 12,534 units at number 13.
Its strong performance challenges the idea that India’s entry-level car market is disappearing. Affordable vehicles still have a significant role to play, especially among first-time buyers and customers prioritising low ownership costs.
Kia Seltos Records Strong Growth
The Kia Seltos finished 12th with 12,541 units.
Its strong performance came at a time when the Hyundai Creta was dealing with supply constraints. Some buyers who wanted a midsize SUV but did not want to wait may have shifted towards the Seltos.
This helped the Seltos strengthen its position against rivals in one of India’s most competitive SUV categories.
Brezza, Victoris and Venue Stay in the Top 16
The Maruti Suzuki Brezza recorded around 12,055 units, while the newer Maruti Victoris managed 11,334 units.
The Hyundai Venue followed with approximately 11,195 units.
These three models demonstrate the depth of competition in the sub-compact and compact SUV segments, where buyers have an increasingly large number of options.
Thar, Innova and XUV 3XO Continue Their Strong Runs
The Mahindra Thar recorded 10,558 units in July, maintaining its position as one of India’s most popular lifestyle SUVs.
The combined Toyota Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross sales reached 9,976 units, an impressive figure for a premium MPV.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO followed with 9,429 units, continuing to compete strongly in the compact SUV segment.
The Mahindra Bolero also remained relevant with 9,326 units. Its simple, rugged character and strong reputation in rural and semi-urban markets continue to keep demand steady.
Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 7XO Complete the Middle of the Chart
The Kia Sonet recorded 8,913 units, while the Mahindra XUV 7XO registered 8,233 units.
Both models operate in highly competitive segments but continue to maintain strong monthly volumes.
The Maruti Grand Vitara was next with 8,127 units, followed by the Tata Tiago with 7,429 units.
At the bottom of the top 25, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder recorded 7,187 units.
What July 2026 Sales Tell Us About the Indian Car Market
July’s rankings reveal several important trends.
First, Maruti Suzuki remains extremely difficult to challenge when it comes to overall market coverage. With 11 models in the top 25, the company has products across almost every major price and body-style category.
Second, Tata Motors continues to have strong SUV products, but its June dominance could not be maintained in July. The Punch remained extremely strong, while the Nexon continued to sell in significant numbers despite dropping in the ranking.
Third, SUVs continue to dominate consumer interest, with Punch, Fronx, Creta, Nexon, Scorpio, Seltos, Brezza, Venue, Thar and several other SUVs appearing prominently in the list.
At the same time, traditional cars such as the Dzire, Wagon R, Swift, Baleno and Alto prove that hatchbacks and sedans are far from dead.
Maruti Suzuki’s July Comeback
The biggest conclusion from July 2026 is simple: Maruti Suzuki has reclaimed its position at the top of India’s car sales battle.
The company not only produced the best-selling car of the month with the Dzire but also occupied four of the first four positions and placed 11 models inside the overall top 25.
Tata, Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia and Toyota continue to put serious pressure on Maruti in individual segments, particularly SUVs. However, July’s numbers show why Maruti Suzuki remains India’s most powerful mass-market carmaker.
If this level of competition continues into the upcoming festive season, the next few monthly sales charts could become even more interesting.
