Maruti’s New Engines, Tata BaaS, Triber Turbo and More: Biggest Auto Updates in India

India’s automotive industry is going through a major technology shift, with manufacturers investing heavily in cleaner engines, electric vehicles, advanced safety systems and new platforms. At the same time, stricter traffic regulations and changing customer preferences are forcing carmakers to rethink how they develop and sell vehicles.

From Maruti Suzuki’s next-generation engine and ADAS plans to Tata Motors’ new Battery-as-a-Service scheme, Renault’s turbocharged Triber and the upcoming Honda Elevate facelift, several important developments are taking place across the market.

Here are the biggest automotive updates buyers should know about.

Maruti Suzuki Working on Low-Cost ADAS and Lighter Cars

Maruti Suzuki is reportedly working on a more affordable Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that could eventually make advanced safety technology available across a much wider section of its range.

The key idea is to reduce the cost of the hardware. Instead of depending heavily on expensive radar sensors, the system is expected to use a high-quality camera and artificial intelligence to monitor the road and identify vehicles, pedestrians, lane markings and other objects.

If the technology becomes affordable enough, Maruti could bring ADAS to mass-market cars such as the Wagon R, Swift, Celerio and Ignis, while higher variants could receive a more complete set of functions.

Maruti already offers cameras and camera-based equipment across several models, but a full ADAS system would represent a significant step up from conventional parking and rear-view camera technology.

Up to 100kg Weight Reduction Could Improve Mileage

Weight reduction is another major area of focus. Reports suggest Maruti is targeting substantial weight savings on future vehicles, with some upcoming models potentially losing around 100kg.

The objective is not simply to make cars lighter. Lower weight can help improve acceleration, braking, handling and fuel efficiency while allowing smaller engines to deliver adequate performance.

There has also been discussion around lighter CNG tanks and better packaging between the engine and cabin. Maruti’s broader focus on lightweight construction could help the company push petrol fuel efficiency towards the 30kmpl mark in some applications.

A previous report on the next-generation Alto, for example, suggested a potential 100kg weight reduction along with fuel efficiency approaching 30kmpl.

Maruti’s Next-Generation Engine Technology

Maruti Suzuki is also exploring a new generation of powertrains that could support multiple fuels and electrification technologies.

Among the technologies being discussed are a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and a larger 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. The reported outputs are around 126bhp and 230Nm for the smaller engine, while the larger unit is expected to develop around 160bhp and 280Nm.

Another interesting development is a 1.2-litre series-hybrid system. In a series hybrid, the petrol engine can primarily act as a generator while an electric motor drives the wheels. This approach could allow Maruti to combine a relatively small petrol engine with electric propulsion.

The company is also exploring compatibility with fuels such as ethanol, CNG and CBG, potentially giving its future powertrains greater flexibility as India’s fuel and emissions regulations evolve.

These technologies remain part of Maruti’s future roadmap rather than confirmed specifications for specific production models, so their final outputs, applications and launch timelines could change.

Maruti Swift Gets a Quiet Mileage and Power Boost

One of the more immediate Maruti updates concerns the Swift.

The hatchback has received revised engine tuning that increases its petrol power by 1.35PS and torque by 0.7Nm. More importantly for buyers, the claimed fuel-efficiency figures have also improved.

The updated figures are:

  • Petrol manual: 25.35kmpl
  • Petrol AMT: 26.25kmpl
  • CNG manual: 35.07km/kg
  • CNG AMT: 35.34km/kg

The petrol engine now produces 82.93PS and 112.4Nm, compared with 81.58PS and 111.7Nm previously.

The changes may appear small on paper, but even a modest improvement in fuel efficiency can make a difference for customers covering high annual kilometres.

Tata Expands Battery-as-a-Service Across Its EV Range

Tata Motors has introduced one of the more interesting changes in the EV market with the expansion of its Battery-as-a-Service, or BaaS, programme.

Instead of paying for the entire car and battery upfront, customers can purchase the vehicle separately and pay a usage-based battery charge.

The latest BaaS structure covers Tata’s entire six-model EV portfolio, including the Tiago EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV and Harrier EV.

ModelBaaS Starting PriceBattery Usage Cost
Tata Tiago EV₹4.69 lakh₹2.60/km
Tata Punch EV₹6.59 lakh₹2.60/km
Tata Nexon EV₹8.99 lakh₹4.40/km
Tata Curvv EV₹10.99 lakh₹5.00/km
Tata Sierra EV₹11.99 lakh₹5.50/km
Tata Harrier EV₹14.49 lakh₹5.90/km

These are entry-level prices and the battery charge is separate. Tata says the battery payment depends on factors including battery size, down payment and financing tenure. The quoted usage figures also use specific daily-running assumptions.

The biggest advantage is the lower initial purchase price. For example, the BaaS version of the Harrier EV reduces the upfront vehicle price by around ₹7.3 lakh compared with its regular starting price.

However, buyers need to calculate the total cost rather than looking only at the headline price. The battery usage charge continues separately, while charging, maintenance and other ownership expenses remain additional.

Next-Generation Tata Nexon Spotted Testing

Tata Motors is also working on the next-generation Nexon.

Test vehicles have reportedly been spotted with a significantly different front-end design. The new model appears to have a more upright and boxier appearance compared with the current Nexon, giving it a stronger SUV-like stance.

The test vehicle has also been seen with alloy wheels similar to those used on the Tata Curvv, suggesting that Tata could bring more elements of its newer design language to the next-generation compact SUV.

The Nexon remains one of Tata’s most important models, particularly because it competes in one of India’s largest SUV segments. The next-generation model is therefore expected to bring changes not only to its styling but potentially to its technology, platform and powertrain options.

Renault Triber Turbo Finally Arrives

Renault has addressed one of the biggest criticisms of the Triber by introducing a turbocharged petrol engine.

The new 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine produces 100PS and 180Nm and is currently paired with a five-speed manual gearbox.

The claimed ARAI fuel efficiency is 21kmpl, which is actually higher than the naturally aspirated petrol manual’s official figure.

Prices start at around ₹7.84 lakh, with the turbo available in three variants. Renault has also upgraded areas such as the suspension, braking and thermal management to accommodate the more powerful engine.

The automatic version and CNG configuration are expected to expand the Triber Turbo’s appeal, although the currently launched turbo version is manual-only.

Honda Elevate Facelift Launching on October 6

Honda is preparing to launch the facelifted Elevate in India on October 6, 2026.

Honda has already opened pre-launch bookings for the updated SUV with a ₹21,000 booking amount. India is also the first market to receive the new Elevate.

The facelift brings styling changes along with additional features. A 360-degree camera is among the confirmed additions, while the cabin is expected to receive a more premium treatment and an updated infotainment system.

The mechanical package is not expected to change significantly, meaning the existing petrol powertrain and transmission choices should continue.

Mahindra Thar EV Continues Testing

Mahindra’s electric SUV programme is also moving forward, with the Thar EV, also associated with the Vision T concept, continuing to be spotted during testing.

The test vehicle retains the tall and upright proportions associated with the Thar family, while the production model is expected to borrow design cues from Mahindra’s electric SUV concepts.

An electric Thar could become one of Mahindra’s most significant future EV launches because it combines the brand’s popular off-road identity with its new electric architecture.

Final specifications, battery capacity, range and pricing are still awaited.

Hyundai Plans a Major Expansion

Hyundai is also preparing for a major expansion of its Indian portfolio.

The company has been working on increasing its product count and strengthening its position in the Indian market. A new manufacturing facility is also being considered as Hyundai looks to increase production capacity.

The company has ambitious plans for the coming years, with multiple new and updated models expected across SUVs, EVs and other segments.

Hyundai’s challenge is particularly important because competition in India’s SUV market has become much stronger, with Tata, Mahindra, Toyota, Kia and Maruti Suzuki expanding their respective portfolios.

BYD Confirms Denza for India

BYD is preparing to bring its premium Denza brand to India.

Denza operates as BYD’s luxury-focused brand, offering more premium electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles. The first models expected for India include the Denza D9 and Denza Z9 GT.

Current estimates place the D9 around ₹90 lakh–₹1 crore, while the Z9 GT is expected to sit around ₹1.10–₹1.50 crore. Both are expected to initially arrive as completely built units rather than locally manufactured vehicles.

The arrival of Denza would give BYD a stronger presence in India’s premium EV market beyond its existing mainstream electric models.

Delhi NCR Tightens PUC Checks

One of the most important updates for existing vehicle owners concerns pollution certificates.

From October 1, Delhi has intensified its “No PUCC, No Fuel” enforcement. Petrol pumps are using cameras, scanners and other digital systems to verify whether vehicles have valid Pollution Under Control certificates. Vehicles without valid certificates can be denied fuel.

For motorists in Delhi NCR, keeping the PUC certificate valid is therefore more important than ever.

Supreme Court Suggests Stronger e-Challan Recovery

Another major regulatory development concerns unpaid traffic fines.

The Supreme Court has discussed stronger mechanisms to recover outstanding e-challans, with a proposal involving the linking of unpaid traffic penalties to electricity bills being reported as one possible enforcement route.

The broader issue is the enormous amount of unpaid traffic penalties accumulated across India. The proposal highlights how authorities are exploring new ways to ensure that traffic fines are actually recovered rather than remaining unpaid indefinitely.

Any such mechanism would depend on the final legal and administrative framework.

Toyota Demonstrates Hilux EV Durability

Toyota has also showcased the durability of its upcoming electric Hilux through an extreme demonstration.

A heavy vehicle was reportedly dropped onto a next-generation Hilux EV during testing, with the demonstration intended to highlight the strength of the vehicle’s structure and cabin.

While such demonstrations are primarily designed to showcase engineering capability, they also underline how manufacturers are attempting to maintain the durability associated with traditional body-on-frame SUVs as they transition towards electric powertrains.

Two-Wheeler Industry Updates

The two-wheeler industry has also seen several important developments.

Ather Crosses 8 Lakh Sales

Ather Energy has crossed the 800,000-unit cumulative sales milestone in India. According to Vahan data reported at the end of September, the company had delivered 800,822 electric scooters since it began operations.

The milestone comes as Ather expands its product range and prepares for further growth in the electric two-wheeler market.

Suzuki Hayabusa Special Edition

Suzuki has launched a special edition of the Hayabusa in India at ₹19.90 lakh ex-showroom, compared with ₹18.99 lakh for the standard version.

The special edition gets a Pearl Vigor Blue colour scheme, unique decals, special badging, a different wheel finish and a standard solo-seat cowl. The mechanical package remains largely unchanged, with the 1,340cc four-cylinder engine continuing to produce 190bhp and 142Nm.

Final Takeaway

India’s automotive industry is entering a period where several technologies will coexist rather than one powertrain immediately replacing another.

Maruti Suzuki is focusing on lighter vehicles, affordable ADAS, flexible-fuel engines and hybrid technology. Tata is experimenting with a new EV ownership model through BaaS, while Renault is adding more performance to the Triber with its turbo-petrol engine.

At the same time, Honda, Mahindra, Hyundai and BYD are preparing important new products, while regulations such as stricter PUC enforcement are directly affecting vehicle owners.

For buyers, the biggest takeaway is that the next few years will offer more choices than ever—from efficient petrol and CNG cars to strong hybrids, affordable EVs and premium electric vehicles. The challenge will be choosing the technology that best fits actual driving needs rather than simply buying the newest technology available.
